Wayne Rooney was surprisingly brought back into the squad after suffering from a nasty Nigerian virus that had stopped him training for a couple of weeks. Sir Alex Ferguson was convinced he was nowhere near ready but Wazza managed to step it up and get back to training quickly. Although he looked short of fitness had he not been passed fit United would of started the match without a single recognised first choice striker in the squad. With Ronaldo still sidelined and Tevez back in Argentina for family reasons, Rooney was partnered in attack by Frazier Campbell. Obafemi Martins stuck the first blow before Darren Fletcher equalised. 6th August 08 - Rooney Set To Miss Start Of The Season
Wayne Rooney delivered a blow for manager Sir Alex Ferguson as he ruled himself out of contention for the start of the new season after picking up a virus. The illness was a result of United's money spinning pre season visit to Africa and has stopped the striker from training for the past week and a half. The boss ruled out malaria but said "it was a nasty
illness and Rooney still hasn't trained". When Wayne will be match fit remains to be seen but the clock is ticking and United will be keen to get him fit as quickly as possible.
